This ministry is comprised of Catholic women and men devoted to Our Lady of Guadalupe. The group dedicates their time, efforts, and prayer to support activities at Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Members devote their time and talent to various fundraising efforts and activities year-round and to support their highlight event in which they sponsor Our Lady of Guadalupe Mass celebrated every December on her Feast Day of December 12th. The mass culminates with traditional Aztec dancers who pay homage to Our Lady via their traditional dance and native traditions. After Mass, the Matachines dance and sometimes a reenactment is performed of the apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe to St. Juan Diego in the Tepeyac hill country of Mexico.
This ministry invites you to join them in keeping alive the many traditions surrounding Our Lady of Guadalupe.
The headpiece resembles the bishop’s cap in honor of the bishop that first saw the image of Our Blessed Mother on St. Juan Diego’s tilma. The cape represents the tilma of St. Juan Diego where Our Lady of Guadalupe placed her image and roses. The bells, maracas, drums represent the music of the Indigenous and their way of praising and showing joy for the Lord.
The Matachines practice once a week on Fridays at 7 PM from August to December.
If you are interested in joining the Matachines please contact Mary Dominguez at 956-563-4657.
